Wait, so is anything going to be done about these? Anyway, I'm adding:

Native name: Tunumiit oraasiat
Language: East Greenlandic
Flag: [flag]kl[/flag]
ISO: tun

Wouldn't Tunumiisut be better as a native name? We also have Kalaallisut.
Maybe we could add Inuktun (North Greenlandic) as well if we add East Greenlandic.

Native name: Avanersuarmiutut
Language: Inuktun (or maybe North Greenlandic?)

That's fine. I know almost nothing about East Greenlandic, though, so I thought it possible that "-sut" was a Kalaalisutism and wouldn't be appropriate for the Eastern variety.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't know nothing about East Greenlandic as well. I just thought that it would be Tunumisut in West Greenlandic and Tunimiisut in East Greenlandic, but I was just guessing. Wikipedia also uses the Tunumiit oraasiat as translation, so just forget what I just said.

I see:

So no... they ain't.
Any exceptions mean "not sorted".

And it still avoids the main thing of my post. Hover tooltips should give whole language name, not just some code that then has to be looked up somewhere else. Otherwise, displaying the flags doesn't tell anyone anything about what languages you are interested in.

Erik / Abavagada

I'm with you on this. Or, at least, have that list sorted by the codes. Currently it's sorted, in principle, by the language native names in English order, although many aren't written in English at all, so it doesn't make much sense. Anyway, I use it mostly to lookup codes when other people post flags which I don't recognize, and searching for two-letter codes using Ctrl+F works poorly in most cases. Searching for a full language name would both be rarer in use and work much better.

Can we get Tocharian A and B added please? :)

Maybe it can be like Norwegian or the Chinese languages, where there is a listing "Tocharian", and sub-listings of "Tocharian A" and "Tocharian B"?

As for flags and native names, there is no flag, and I don't believe the native names are known.

The codes are as follows:

Tocharian A - xto
Tocharian B - txb

Thank you very much!

How about Newfoundland French (français terreneuvien), the sort spoken on the Port-Au-Port peninsula? It's completely separate from both Acadian French (which gets its own option) and Québécois French (which also gets its own option).

The francophone communities of Port-Au-Port are descendents of Basque and Norman fisherman who settled there between 1783 and 1904, when France relinquished control of the island. The local dialect is very distinct and has more in common with neighbouring Saint Pierre et Miquelon than Québec or Acadie.

If you need some proof, here's a peer-reviewed article from l'Université d'Avignon on the differences of Newfoundland French from other North American varieties: http://www.univ-avignon.fr/mini_site/group/222/1995.pdf

Franco-terreneuviens have their own flag, too. Here's a copy of it on Wikimedia Commons, under GNU licensing so you're free to use it: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franco-Terreneuviens.svg

Perhaps you could use the code fr-NL (which is how Newfoundland is usually shortened for postal reasons in Canada).

Why does Hawaiian have that ugly-ass unofficial flag that has never been widely used? Because someone complained the real flag is "colonialist"? I realize the motivation for doing so, but at least other flags representing indigenous peoples have some official status (like the Māori flag) and this one doesn't, so why don't we go back to the real flag of Hawaii? At the very least it wouldn't make my eyes bleed.

What about changing the Sumerian's flag? I really don't like the question mark, it's so ugly. I suggest using the cuneiform AN sign for it, since it's the most widespread symbol, mostly associated with Sumerian. It also looks cool, and the ETCSL (Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Language) website uses it for their favicon. :D

Here it is:
Image
Pwetty pwease?

I tried to resize it to the 20x15, and it looks kind of like this: Image
However you might want to do it yourselves (for example, resizing to 25x15 instead). Of course, I believe it will look better with the grey border every flag icon's got.

Edit:
Alternatively, you could also use the name of the language EME-GIR15, made up by two signs:

Although I think the AN sign symbolizes the language better.

I also like the idea of the dingir character as the Sumerian flag. It's fitting in several ways.

I've added the Sumerian flag.

For now no new languages will be added, for a couple of reasons; the first is that we are more busy with other things on the site, especially the forum re-organisation; the other is that we are working to make more consistency in the language list, including a policy of what languages will not be considered for adding. Until we have that sorted out, please refrain from asking for new languages.

We will add any missing flags for existing languages however.

I don't really have a new language to request, but rather would like to request a change in the name of one of the languages we already have:

Inupiat

I'd like to change the English name to the following, as this is the only form I've ever found in literature I've seen:
Eng: Iñupiaq
And the Native name is more correctly spelled: Iñupiatun

As this of course is not a pressing matter, there is absolutely no rush. :)

You need to replace your signature with the following:

Code: Select all

L1: [flag=]en -AU[/flag], speaks: [flag=]fr[/flag], [flag=]pt -BR[/flag], [flag=]mfe[/flag] Learning: [flag=]grc[/flag] [flag=]tr[/flag]

In this way it works:
L1: [flag=]en -AU[/flag], speaks: [flag=]fr[/flag], [flag=]pt -BR[/flag], [flag=]mfe[/flag] Learning: [flag=]grc[/flag] [flag=]tr[/flag]

The flag code has been modified some weeks ago.

All corrections are welcome and appreciated.

Since initially proposing it, I've got to learn more about the culture, so I propose some changes to
[flag=]ar-CY[/flag] ar-CY

ISO code: acy (ar-CY should be okay)
Native Name: Sanna
English Name: Cypriot Maronite Arabic

Most importantly, the Maronite Community of Cyprus uses this flag - the white cedar flag

I've changed the English name for Iñupiaq, added the flag for Nivkh, and changed both names and the flag for Cypriot Arabic.
